I'm trying to think of what you call things that you can't remember what to call 'ems....Here's some:

Thinger
Thingie(y)
Thingamabobber
Whatchamacallit
Watzit
Thingamajig
Thingamajigger
Doohickey
Doodah
Deal-io
Flippin' piece of trash

for people:

whatshername
whatsherface
whatsherbucket
whatshersmell
whatshertrash
(are you seeing a pattern?)

Please feel free to add your own.

How come you only can't remember girls names?

This is phonetic preference rather than gender preference. "whatsher..." just rolls off the tongue more easily that "whathis..." It also connects more easily with the suffix. Try substituting "his" for "her" in all the words listed and you'll see what I mean.

These feminine versions of the words were also more essential in my vernacular during the dating years. We (men) often talked about women without actually knowing them.

I think you forgot words for the truly confused. If you blend your words for things with your words for people, you get a much more comprehensive description, i.e. whatsamabob, thingamerface, whosamerjigger. These will come in useful when robots rule the earth.

I would have to agree with the increased usefulness of the feminine-based words with regards to dating. I remember referring to one of my roommate's former love interests as "girlface."

Also, I think you missed "doodad."

Um... Rude much!??? Doodah is a completely respectable name for a living breathing child (also known as Nola) and is in no way something you call something you can't remember the name of (clear throat nervously...)

Actually, I almost made reference to the fact to Doodah is a Shelley Person, but I thought it would be too inside-jokey. Please know that I hold all persons named Doodah in highest regard.
